US Imposes New Limitations on China’s Purchase of Chip Technology

By ET Bureau - October 11, 2022 1 Mins Read

The U.S. has introduced new rules that will restrict the sale of chips and chip production equipment to China. According to Protocol, some of the rules are going into effect right now. In the upcoming weeks, additional ones will be introduced.

The initial set of regulations focuses on restricting chip exports to China. According to Protocol, a new foreign direct product rule will prevent companies from selling chips used in “advanced computing and artificial intelligence applications” to customers in China. According to reports, the rule may not only be applicable to goods made by American businesses, but also to chips made by foreign companies using American technology.

The components and chips intended for supercomputers will be subject to yet another new foreign direct product rule. The rule, along with the restrictions on chips for AI and advanced computing applications, is set to go into effect on Oct. 21.
