The U.S. Commerce Department confirmed that it is looking forward to amending its
prohibitions on U.S. companies doing business with Huawei, to allow them to collaborate on
setting standards for the next-generation 5G networks.
The U.S. Commerce Department, along with other agencies, signed off as a rule change, which is awaiting publication in the Federal Register.
Last year, the United States had placed Huawei on the Commerce Department’s entity list,
which restricted sales of U.S. technology and goods to the company, citing national security. Government officials and tech experts confirmed that the rule change should not be viewed as a step to weaken the U.S. resolve against Huawei. They confirmed the Huawei entity listing put the States at a disadvantage in standards settings, as companies develop different specifications to allow equipment from different companies to function together.
