Mobile payment company Square has bought an AI research startup, Dessa. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition will help Square bolster its machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities as it looks to improve its products. Founded in 2016, Toronto-based Dessa specializes in the detection of deepfakes. Dessa will continue to operate under its brand and will maintain its headquarters in Toronto. The company offers core products in Atlas and Orbit, both part of its Foundations platform. It partners with organizations in areas like health care, astronomy, and education to use machine learning.
