Microsoft Corp. has restructured its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc. in order to gain regulatory approval in the United Kingdom.
One of the biggest video game developers in the world, Activision Blizzard, was purchased by Microsoft in early 2017 for USD 68.7 billion. Shortly after, the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA, opened an investigation into the acquisition. This past April, the regulator made the decision to halt the transaction after concluding that it raises antitrust issues.
Microsoft proposed a set of antitrust commitments prior to the deal being halted in order to allay the CMA’s worries. The CMA halted the transaction after concluding that it might have a negative impact on the cloud gaming market, in which Microsoft is a significant player.
