Meta Platforms Inc. has released the source code for NLLB-200, an artificial intelligence program it developed internally that can translate text between 200 different languages. A collection of tools developed to make it simpler for academics to use NLLB-200 in software projects is also being made available by the business.
According to Meta, many of the 200 languages that NLLB-200 is capable of understanding are not well-supported by competing AI translation systems. Less than 25 African languages, according to the business, are currently supported by common translation software. For 55 African languages, use NLLB-200. Another area where NLLB-200 has an advantage over competing techniques is translation accuracy, according to Meta.
The business used BLEU, an algorithm for gauging the caliber of machine-translated text, to assess the system’s correctness. According to Meta, the BLEU scores for the NLLB-200 were on average 44% higher than the previous record.
