Amazon Web Services Inc., Microsoft Corp., Meta Platforms Inc., and TomTom NV, a manufacturer of GPS navigators, launched a new industry group today with the goal of making map data more accessible.
Operating as a unit of the Linux Foundation is the recently established Overture Maps Foundation. Google LLC is conspicuously absent, which may be a sign that other players consider the search giant’s Maps service to be a dominant force that must be respected. Integrating map data from various sources can be a challenging and time-consuming process for developers.
AWS, Microsoft, Meta, and TomTom hope to simplify the task through the recently established Overture Maps Foundation. The consortium wants to make it easy to combine location data from different sources.
