Italy Conditionally Agrees to Vodafone 5G Deal with Huawei

According to sources, Vodafone Italian unit has secured conditional approval to use equipment made by Chinese technology giant Huawei in its 5G radio access network.

Italy can block or oblige tough conditions on the contracts involving non EU vendors under the golden powers. It has been used three times since 2012 in order to restrict foreign interest in industries deemed to be of strategic consequence.

Recently, Prime Minister Mario Draghi authorised the agreement between Vodafone and Huawei. The administration also imposed a set of prescriptions like restrictions on remote intervention to fix technical glitches and a high security threshold. Both Vodafone and Huawei declined to comment at the moment.
