Google plans to close Hangouts available for the paying Workspace clients by late 2021. The organization plans to shift the users to Google Chat by next year. They also plan to make Chat a free service rather than limiting it to paying Workspace clients. By the first half of 2021, users will be migrated to Chats from Hangouts. Automatic migration of Hangouts contact saved history, and conversations will also be part of the migration process.

The official declaration of the migration process for users is yet to be announced. Users will be provided with specific instructions once the transition starts. Google believes that Chat has an easier process of planning and collaboration.
