Google has unveiled KataOS, an early exploration into a new secure operating system for embedded systems on open-source RISC-V chips.
Rust, a programming language used by both the Linux kernel project and the Android Open Source Project, is used “almost entirely” in Google’s KataOS. The GitHub page for the project emphasizes that Sparrow and KataOS “are definitely a work in progress.” A reference implementation of KataOS is called Sparrow. A few years ago, Google unveiled its Fuchsia OS, which also had the Internet of Things in mind.
The Nest Hub and other Made by Google devices were using it, but Google wants to make it more of a general-purpose operating system.
