Google LLC claims it has achieved a major breakthrough in its efforts to build a quantum computer that can be used for practical applications.
The company said its discovery will help it overcome the challenge of “quantum errors”, one of the main obstacles to developing a working quantum computer. According to Google Quantum AI researchers, they have discovered a way to exponentially reduce the error rate of quantum computers as the size of the system increases, allowing them to reach a “tipping point”.
The company says it is now confident it will eventually be able to achieve “commercial value” for quantum computers. Google researchers have now published a blueprint for building a useful error-correcting quantum computer with key milestones.
