At the Code Conference last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the tech company needed to become 20% more efficient — a comment some in the industry took to mean headcount reductions could soon be on the table.
It appears that forecast may be coming true right now. According to TechCrunch and Google, the business is cutting projects at Area 120, its own R&D branch. The incubator will be cut in half as a result of the company’s “reduction in force,” which was announced on Tuesday after the cancellation of half the teams’ projects.
Elias Roman, the director of Area 120, claims that the division wants to narrow its focus to just AI-first projects.
