According to industry and regulatory sources, the EU is poised to succeed in its strongest attempt to date to establish a global standard by helping European telecom providers win their ten-year battle to make Big Tech pay for network costs.
The six biggest content providers make up just over half of all data internet traffic, according to Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE), Orange (ORAN.PA), Telefonica (TEF.MC), Telecom Italia (TLIT.MI), and the big operators, so it is all about a fair share contribution, they claim.
Telecom companies would have to invest hundreds of billions of euros while carrying a heavy debt load in order to achieve EU goals of having 5G everywhere and Gigabit home connections by 2030.
