The EU lawmakers hope to de-escalate trade tensions with the U.S., hoping Washington will lower steel tariffs as a goodwill gesture post the series of concessions by Brussels in recent years.

European lawmakers were stung when Washington expanded steel tariffs just this month as the two economic powers tried to resume trade negotiations.

European Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan is expected to return to Washington on March 16 under the drive to improve transatlantic ties and prevent the threat of U.S. tariffs on European cars renewed by President Donald Trump last month.
