The EU commissioner, Thierry Breton has stated that the US and China are the world’s leaders in harvesting and exploiting personal data. He said that the European Union must be careful that the same thing does not happen when it comes to business-to-business data, reports Reuters. Breton stated that Europeans should be the owners of their data, and this data needs to be handled in Europe.
He said platforms in the US and China markets had benefited from substantial internal markets while garnering data from elsewhere by means that are now being scrutinized and questioned by authorities. The EU’s GDPR applies to all companies processing or controlling the personal information of EU residents, regardless of where those firms are located.
