China Reveals Plans for Mega Data Center Clusters

China has approved plans to build 4 mega clusters of data centers in the north and west of the country to support the data needs of to finance Beijing and major coastal centers, the country’s top national planner said.

Clusters will be formed in the northern region of Inner Mongolia, Gansu province, northwestern Ningxia region, and southwestern Guizhou province, the National Development and Transformation Commission said in 4 separate statements. The locations could use their energy and environmental benefits to set up green mega data centers with low carbon, state planner said.

The move comes as energy-hungry data centers in eastern China find it difficult to expand due to local government restrictions on electricity use.
