Ampere Aims to Beat Intel and AMD to the Low-Power Cloud Processor Business

Ampere has outperformed rivals Intel and Advanced Micro Devices in some main server features with the release of two Altra server processors. CEO Renee James said that the company now expects to race ahead with even smarter chips in the coming years.

Ampere’s Altra processor, which is now shipping, has 80 cores and consumes significantly less power per core than competing Intel and AMD processors, according to Ampere chief product officer Jeff Wittich.
