Turkcell digitizes voice services with Mavenir's cloud-native IMS solution-01

Mavenir is a networking software provider focused on building future-proof networks with cloud-native software that can run on any cloud and change the way the world connects. The company has successfully deployed very large fully cloud-native IMS systems in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Relying on the deployment of Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS, Turkcell has developed voice services for the 5G era in Turkey, and has successfully migrated all the voice call traffic of 11 million customers using VoLTE. The extra capacity also leaves room for Turkcell to fuel continued growth. The company plans to expand capacity to support 24 million 4G subscribers out of a total of 38 million.

Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS solution is a microservices-based architecture built for a fully automated cloud environment and has been deployed in Turkcell’s pioneering unified telco cloud. The microservices architecture enables operators to leverage the same IMS Core to support VoLTE and 5G voice services and deploy new services faster and more efficiently. The solution can also be used in conjunction with Mavenir’s Rich Communication Services to provide customers with advanced and interoperable messaging services to combat the onslaught of OTT applications. Mavenir is a global leader in VoLTE IMS1 and a leader in messaging services for voice and messaging that handle more than 11 billion messages per day.

Microservices make it easier for operators to upgrade and expand services, as evidenced by the rapid growth of VoLTE subscribers supported by Turkcell’s deployment. The ability to quickly spin up large numbers of virtual machines also increases service reliability and resilience, as there is no single point of failure. The software-centric approach also increases operator agility: development, trial and deployment cycles are significantly shorter than with traditional infrastructure based on proprietary hardware.

During this deployment at Turkcell, the unique value of the scalability of Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS was fully demonstrated. Families in Turkey love to reunite during the country’s official Bayram holiday. During this period, telecommunications traffic can also surge so that there are occasional outages. Affected by the epidemic, Turkey announced the closure of the city ahead of the long Bayram holiday in May and July 2021. According to Turkcell forecasts, traffic during peak hours during the holiday season could double as a result. However, thanks to the scalability of the solution, Mavenir doubled its network capacity in the days following the government’s announcement of the lockdown, and traffic did surge without interruption. In addition to having successfully deployed the solution in its mobile network, Turkcell is integrating Mavenir vIMS into its fixed network.

Dr. Gediz Sezgin, CTO of Turkcell, said: ” Our unified telco cloud and virtualized mobile core network are the foundation of Turkcell’s ambitious goal of being the first to deliver industry-leading services to our customers. Virtualized IMS has always been our network function virtualization This is a key network transformation milestone in our NFV journey and 5G roadmap. With its cloud-ready, software-oriented approach, Mavenir has been a valued partner for us.”

BG Kumar, President of Mavenir’s Communication Services Business Group, said: ” Through our experience working with Turkcell, we have found that supporting both VoLTE and Voice over New Radio (VoNR) in a common IMS Core has the potential to simplify operators as they plan to roll out 5G services. Transformation process. Cloud-native virtualized IMS provides business continuity for voice services that might otherwise be overlooked in the rush to 5G.”

Mavenir and Turkcell Group have in-depth cooperation on many fronts. In addition to its field deployment in Turkey, vIMS is currently deployed within Turkcell’s Lifecell subsidiary in Ukraine, while plans are underway for deployment at the group’s BeST and KKTCell sites in Belarus and Cyprus.

Mavenir also provides rich communication services and RCS business messaging, and dynamic routing solutions in Turkey, and has partnered with Turkcell to launch the world’s first fully containerized open radio access using O-RAN Split 7.2 architecture in Turkcell Telecom Cloud network (Open RAN) calls.

Mavenir is exhibiting in Hall 2, Stand 2H60 at Mobile World Congress 2022, held at the Fira Gran Via convention center in Barcelona, Spain.
