Remote working has resulted in a significant increase in security challenges for organizations regarding data loss

The latest report from email security firm Tessian reveals how a sudden shift to remote working has increased data security threats for companies. The State of Data Loss Prevention 2020 report says nearly half (48%) of employees are less likely to follow safe data practices while working from home.

Remote Work Adoption to Increase Post COVID-19 Despite Security Concerns

About 91% of IT leaders trust their employees follow best security practices when working remotely. Meanwhile, 52% of employees believe they can get away with riskier behavior while working remotely. Nearly half of them said they are ignoring security practices as they are not being monitored by IT while others 47% said they being distracted at home by childcare and lack of a desk setup. About 51% of the staff said security policies are a hindrance that affects their productivity while 54% said they would find workarounds if security policies stop them from doing their jobs. The majority of IT leaders also said data loss prevention is challenging when employees are working remotely. IT leaders in US organizations with more than 1,000 send at least 27,500 unauthorized emails are a year, the report found.

Offering insights about rising risks about insider threats, the report said 34% of employees take company documents with them when they leave a job. Forty-one percent of them aged 18-30 have taken company documents with them while leaving their job. One of the biggest threats to company security is human and IT teams lack of true visibility, as per the report. There is a strong need of addressing security cultures and adopting advanced solutions. This is necessary to prevent employees from making mistakes resulting in data breaches and non-compliance.

Although the following security measures are essentials for employees working remotely, organizations need to take care that these critical solutions do not impede employees’ productivity. It is important for IT leaders to show their employees workarounds if security gets in the way of their productivity. Therefore, it is crucial for data loss prevention to be flexible for it to be effective.
