Employees globally are worried about their health and safety but at the same time, they must also support the increased demand for services while adjusting to remote working capabilities. Demanding times like these require IT leaders to keep their teams focused and motivated to deliver. It is essential to have open channels of communication with the team, to ensure they are able to focus and move ahead without any professional insecurities or hesitation. Team leaders need to provide necessary information to their teams, to help them calm and refocus.
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased uncertainty in the market, so it is important to create a safe and welcoming environment for team members. Indulging in more one-on-one with teams will be helpful for leaders to understand their needs and challenges. It could even be a quick check-in instead of lengthy discussions.
A crisis is a good time to focus on innovation and this may just be the best time for a CXO to create and nurture this environment with their team, encouraging them to germinate new ideas. In fact, now is the downtime that agile and fast-paced technology teams needed, to have the freedom to create spaces and environments for thoughtful discussion and groups to evaluate ideas.
As virtual meetings are going to be a key part of the “new normal”, organizations will need to make them innovative and seamless. Meetings should also be streamlined and have a definite purpose that could include a range of things from solving problems or developing new ideas. While daily meetings need to be brief and engaging, and the top priority needs to be managing daily tasks, it is crucial to focus on the future.
The coronavirus crisis is a good time for CIOs and IT leaders to encourage their teams to look ahead at how disruption will create risk and opportunity. It is important to turn the team’s attention to looming challenges, as it will help in mobilizing the team to look around corners. An efficient IT team could change a company’s business model and even help in expanding into newer markets. Now is the time for leaders to inspire team members by challenging its members to help create the future.
