About 85% of companies consider cloud adoption necessary for digital innovation. But, the choice between edge computing vs. cloud computing gets tougher with remote working culture setting in.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, people have realized the actual potential of cloud technology, enabling companies to continue operations globally, while almost all their workforce log on from home.
However, using one technology does not eliminate the ability to use another. Experts also believe that edge computing will eventually replace traditional cloud computing, but that isn’t the case. Both technologies have critical and distinguishable roles within the IT ecosystem.
That being said, there are certain use cases where edge computing has advantages over the traditional centralized cloud infrastructure, especially during the sudden movement to the remote working culture.

In conjunction, edge computing can even tackle more localized data processing, freeing up the cloud for general-purpose business needs, and assuring that the applications perform faster.
In many cases, where the need to process data is not time-bound, the cloud offers lots of processing power, large-scale data analysis, and storage capabilities. Edge computing offers a solution to relocate data processing closer to the device at the edge of the network, to eliminate latency and therefore reduce incidences of network lag and related failure.
Enhanced Security and Privacy
With a large number of people working away from the office, there is a multiplier effect created, of the amount of data being accessed remotely. These increase incidences of remote access that grants cybercriminals a better opportunity to access company data and misuse it. With edge computing, data is filtered and securely processed locally, rather than moved to any central data center, before being delivered to the organization’s network core through the cloud. If there is less sensitive data transfer between the cloud and the devices, better security for businesses and their customers is assured.
COVID-19 has altered the working landscape, pushing the business leaders to rethink their
remote working strategies. During this crisis, the cloud has allowed seamless data sharing across organizations securely. However, there are certain instances where edge computing ensures easing out bandwidth, increase network speeds, and fight security concerns. Choosing cloud or edge computing isn’t an either/or proposition; both the technologies have different uses and purposes of continuing playing significant roles for the foreseeable future. As remote working turns to be the “new normal” for businesses, it is most likely that the future network infrastructure will depend on the combination of the two.
