When cloud computing first emerged, one widespread belief was that it would supplant all computing. The power system, which at the time had essentially eliminated scattered local power generation, served as a typical analogy. However, there are various reasons why the cloud cannot always replace on-premises infrastructure. Pushing computation closer to data collection and consumption is frequently desirable in the context of edge computing in particular.
Edge computing enables even remote facilities to circumvent data transmission constraints and latency concerns, minimize bandwidth requirements, remove time gaps, and increase cybersecurity by processing data closer to the source. However, putting in place an edge architecture isn’t always simple. Here are three guidelines for IT leaders when they expand their company’s operations outside of the network.
Do not overlook cloud computing
It’s improbable that network infrastructure will exist just at the periphery in the future. For some of their storage and analytics demands, factories will still need to integrate edge solutions successfully. Cloud resources are simple to ignore, but enterprises will still need to monitor how much of their cloud storage is actually being used.
On-site visibility and data control are traditionally greatly facilitated by on-premise visibility, but edge technologies will change that. Given the restricted capacities of edge nodes, it is time to establish new criteria for data storage. Companies must be willing to pay a premium to their cloud provider to limit their usage or set aside time to carry out frequent audits on their own.
Even Kubernetes may benefit from this consistency. For starters, modern edge devices are not always that small. The model inference is rapidly being moved to the periphery, even if training Machine Learning (ML) models still frequently takes place in a centralized location. High bandwidth connections can no longer be as necessary to send all the data back home for analysis. Additionally, it means that any necessary local actions (such as shutting down a broken system or about to do so) are not dangling on a dependable and quick network connection.
Even though the workload of today is fairly light, firms may wish to keep their alternatives open. Maybe their workload will increase. Maybe companies wish to include a high availability option. Perhaps they decide to rely less on a dependable network link.
Running Kubernetes at the edge will enable organizations using Kubernetes in their data centers to standardize software lifecycle management and deliver consistency throughout their hybrid cloud architecture.
To this purpose, numerous projects are being worked on to improve Kubernetes for a range of use cases with various needs for networking, availability, and footprint.
Organizations that put off thinking about security until after their edge installation is complete will eventually pay the price. Businesses must prepare for the complete integration of new edge systems from the start rather than trying to fit security solutions around them retroactively.
Since edge data is more susceptible, it may be the ideal time to establish a zero-trust paradigm. Zero trust strengthens edge resources against both internal and external attacks while also better encrypting data as it travels via the network, making it a logical security complement for edge computing.
It’s true that manufacturers can gain significantly from edge computing. For those willing to spend, it offers genuine benefits in the form of improved operational visibility, decreased system downtime, and much-increased flexibility. The benefits haven’t been exaggerated.
