IoT connectivity is just one aspect of ensuring IoT technology interacts with all other facets of deployment; however, IT leaders must resolve connectivity from the application level up to the entire network and system infrastructure.
With an increasing number of IoT services and networking options available, businesses must determine which solution can provide them with the data throughput and range they need, as well as the amount of latency they can handle, the scalability of the IoT they require, and the mobility, protection, and cost savings they need.
Decisions about IoT connectivity need to be determined by business needs. IT leaders will have a straightforward path in some situations, and there will be tradeoffs between communication options in others. So let’s look at the four major aspects of IoT connectivity that IT leaders can consider.

Video surveillance, conferencing and video, and photo collection function best on broadband networks that can provide vast swaths of bandwidth on demand. But what if a company has hundreds of small branches spread around rural and urban areas?
As the remote workforce grows, businesses will find themselves with remote workers in remote, often far flung areas who must make do with what they have, such as DSL. If a company has to collect significant quantities of data in the field, the data needs to be captured and then downloaded to a field office’s local server. In these scenarios, IT must determine whether or not introducing more costly broadband is feasible and cost-effective, and whether or not other networking options are more appropriate.
The IoT industry is populated by a multitude of enterprising startups without a uniform level of interoperability. Some IoT solution providers have their own proprietary operating systems that are incompatible with others. The end result may be a jumble of disparate IoT silos. Inevitably, the company would need to link all of these devices for data sharing, and it might not be an easy task. IT administrators must test system compatibility and collaborate with vendors who have taken steps to integrate their products and services.
Businesses who want to scale up their IoT deployments must find out how to do so in a sustainable way. Organizations must add more IoT connectivity devices, such as sensors, gateways, routers, or cameras, as their infrastructure grows, and incorporate systems or services that can track all activity, manage the protection, and automated software and firmware updates and deployments.
To do so, IT departments must automate and re-architect networks and systems so that they can scale as more IoT devices are added. IT teams also have the task of vetting each IoT device for compatibility with underlying networks and systems as well as other IoT connectivity devices.
